Let Your Light Shine: First Day of First Grade

Dear Zoë,

On a day when the whole country is focused on the sun (and the eclipse going on right now as I write this), we sat around our kitchen table talking about Jesus, THE light of the world:

"I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."  John 8:12

We talked about how when our lives are filled with Jesus, we have his light inside us that will shine out through us:

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."  Matthew 5:14-16

There is a lot of darkness in this world, sweet one, and even in your school. Pain, hurt, lies, hate, fear. But you know the One who IS light "in whom there is no darkness at all." (1st John 1:5) You do not need to be afraid of the darkness or let it overwhelm you. In fact, walk out into this world shining that light of yours - the light of the truth, goodness, hope, joy, peace and love of Jesus that you carry in your heart. Be a part of Jesus' work shining light into the darkness, exposing what is wrong, bringing truth to the lies, bringing healing to the pain, comforting those who are hurting, loving away the hate, speaking peace to those who are afraid.

You have a beautiful light. Don't cover it up or hide it. Don't even let it be eclipsed by something else blocking the way. "Walk in the light, as he is in the light." (1 John 1:7) Speak truth. Be kind. Show love. Let your light shine brightly through what you say and do, and people will see Jesus at work in you.

We are so very proud of you and the de-light-ful lady you have become! Your little brother will miss you sorely, but we know that you will have a wonderful time at school! Here's to another year and many adventures ahead!

love,
Mommy
